Singlers Marsh
Singlers Marsh covers about 15.5 acres (6.3 hectares) comprising grassland, willow scrub and mature trees beside the River Mimram. It is a local nature reserve and attracts a range of wildlife. In 2021 the Singlers Marsh Action Group was formed to protect the site from the effects of proposed housing developments in the area which it believes threaten to change the character of Singlers Marsh 'dramatically and irreversibly'.

River Mimram: Fulling Mill Lane Ford
Although the river mainly flows through the old mill, and under the road, the water in this mill bypass channel crosses the road in a culvert that can become full in periods of heavy flow, creating a ford. Please see Image] for a picture of the site with the ford in operation.

River Mimram, Oakhills Wood
Here the River Mimram passes under Fulling Mill Lane just outside Welwyn; this is a ford when river levels are high. There was a water mill here (the building still survives) fed by a separate channel. The Mimram flows for 12 miles across Hertfordshire rising near Whitwell and is a tributary of the River Lea.

This is the view looking upstream as the river flows alongside the Singlers Marsh Local Nature Reserve. All the old large scale Ordnance Survey maps available online, up to the edition of 1937, call the watercourse "The River Maran or Mimram".

Rare cattle breeds are used to manage vegetation on Singlers Marsh and these two beasts are examples of English Longhorns, bred for their docility and ideal for grazing areas with public access.
