Oaklands. Old Great North Road.
This parade of shops lies alongside the old Great North Rd and includes a post office, off licence and florist. The new flats are on the site of an old petrol station. The photograph is taken from the end of Turpins Ride, a road named after Dick who rode past this spot on the famous ride on Black Bess.

Old Milepost by the B197, north of Welwyn Garden City
Cast iron post by the B197 (was A1), in parish of Welwyn (Welwyn Hatfield District), Mardley Hill, outside North Star PH, Oaklands, on the verge, on North West side of road. Cheshunt iron casting, erected by the Welwyn turnpike trust in the 19th century.
