A down van train between the tunnels
The 1411 Kings Cross to Edinburgh vans would follow hard on the heals of the 1405 Kings Cross passenger. Normally a short van train that could run quite fast one would see many different types of locos working this train. Here a London Midland Region class 40 is pictured , rather unusual as it must have been borrowed. Normally it would be an Eastern Region loco on this train. This was rather a nice rural spot to spend walking around on a fine summers afternoon. The track gangs equipment does rather litter the railway embankment.

Up ECML express between the Welwyn Tunnels
View northward, towards Hitchin and the North; ex-Great Northern ECML. The Up relief express is headed by A3 Pacific No. 60065 'Knight of Thistle'. The two-track stretch of the ECML over Welwyn Viaduct and the two tunnels north of Welwyn North station remains a serious bottleneck - too expensive to widen, but was a paradise for railway photographers.
