Redbourn: The Nicky Line & the M1 Motorway bridge
The west side of the skew bridge built to take the motorway over the now-dismantled Hemel Hempstead to Harpenden railway (The Nicky Line). The lines were lifted in 1979, but National Cycle Network Route 57 now follows the trackbed. Preliminary clearing works for the current widening of the motorway have taken place in the foreground. Construction of M1 Motorway near Redbourn, 1958
Viewed from a Rail Tour train on the Harpenden - Hemel Hempstead branch, work is in progression on a massive bridge to carry the M1 over a little branch-line soon to be closed, but also probably over the A487 Hemel Hempstead road.

Nickey Line tunnel
The south end of the new Nickey Line tunnel beneath the widened M1 motorway. During the widening the old original railway bridge was lined and extended with this less elegant concrete tunnel.
