Romeland House
Early 18th Century house on Romeland Hill, built by Sir Christopher Wren's stonemason, Sir Edward Strong. It was home to Frederick Vandermeulen, a wealthy Dutchman who had made St Albans his home and who in 1750 commissioned the architect Sir Robert Taylor to work further on the building, including the frontage and interior design. It now serves as offices. Grade II* listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103038.

Romeland House
A large house built around 1710 by Edward Strong, Sir Christopher Wren's Master Mason in the building of St Paul's Cathedral in London, who also built Ivy House in St Peter's Street (see
Image). It was built for the Dutch artist Frederick Vandermeulen, who later had it redesigned in the 1750s by Sir Robert Taylor, who was also responsible for work on 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's residence in London. It is grade II* listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103080.

Romeland House, St Albans
An urbane Georgian house built of purple-brown brick with red brick dressings. The central three bays are slightly advanced under a pediment, and the central bay has a Tuscan doorcase, Venetian window and Diocletian window in the pediment. Built c1760 for Frederick Vandermeulen. Robert Taylor may have been his architect. Grade II* listed.
