Victoria Street
Buildings in Victoria Street. Prominent in the centre is Trinity URC (see Image), built in 1903 to a design of Smee, Mence and Houchin Architects after the local Congregational Church congregation had outgrown the chapel in Spicer Street. Part of the cost was contributed by one of the deacons, Samuel Ryder, local businessman and later Mayor of St Albans and founder of the Ryder Cup golf competition (see Image). In 1981, while undergoing renovation and modernization, it suffered a serious fire, reducing it to a roofless shell. It was fully rebuilt.

This Whitbread house on Victoria Street is now a free house. The pub sign has been repainted and trestle tables have replaced the car on the pavement. The adjacent derelict land has been built on since this photo was taken.

St Albans: Trinity United Reformed Church
Located in Beaconsfield Road at its junction with Victoria Street, the Church was completed and blessed on 8 October 1903, predating the nearby Catholic church by just over a year. The church suffered a disastrous fire in 1981 which left it as a roofless shell. There is a photo taken during the fire on the local BBC web page here http://www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties/content/articles/2006/02/14/stop_press_exhibition_feature.shtml The Church's own website is here http://www.trinitystalbans.org.uk/

Trinity United Reformed Church
This is the façade of the south transept, with its fine Decorated style 5-lancet window. Built as a Congregational chapel in 1903 by Smee, Mence and Houchin, it is a fine example of red brick with buff terracotta detailing.
