Kinnaird Head Lighthouse
The lighthouse was built inside Kinnaird Head Castle, which is said to have dated from 1570.
The lighthouse has ceased operation, but is open to the public as part of The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses http://lighthousemuseum.org.uk/

Kinnaird Head - Old lighthouse
The original light was mounted on the roof of the square tower but the weight was too much for the foundations. This was overcome by building a new circular structure within the existing building to support the light. The original building provided room for lamp oil, spares and a workshop at ground level and fairly spartan accommodation on the first floor.
The lighthouse was replaced by an automated light in 1991. Image

The old lighthouse at Kinnaird Head
This lighthouse was the first to be built on the Scottish mainland. Very unusually, the base of the light tower is a 16th century castle.
