The original light was mounted on the roof of the square tower but the weight was too much for the foundations. This was overcome by building a new circular structure within the existing building to support the light. The original building provided room for lamp oil, spares and a workshop at ground level and fairly spartan accommodation on the first floor. The lighthouse was replaced by an automated light in 1991.
