Steadings at Ythan Lodge
The steadings look as if they are only partly in use, with a few cattle in one of the inner courts. The chimneys of Knockhall Castle can just be seen above the roof between the two red doors.

Knockhall Castle
The Mains of Knockhall is the main farm for this tiny community but the steadings in the foreground belong to Ythan Lodge. Knockhall Castle can also be seen on the ridge. The castle was built by 3rd Lord Sinclair of Newburgh in 1565. It has been a ruin since 1734 when it accidentally caught fire.

Knockhall Castle
Rather a fortified house than a castle, this is an L-plan tower house with an extra wing on the rear. There are gunloops at ground level, and windows only in the upper storeys. The door has been walled up to prevent access.

Knockhall castle at sunset
Knockhall Castle was the home of the Laird of Udny until it burned down in 1734. It remains a roofless ruin to this day. Jamie Fleeman was the Laird's fool (jester). On the night the castle burned Jamie, aged 21, saved the Laird's treasure chest by picking it up and throwing it through the window. No mean feat given that it took 3 strong men even to lift it!
