The impressive statue in Southgate Street is in honour of Nerva, who went on to be Emperor from September 96AD – January 98. It was under his reign that Gloucester was founded - as an army recruitment centre - and known as 'Colonia Nerviana Glevensis'. This work was created by Anthony Stones and unveiled on 19th October, 2002.
