Knighton Neighbourhood

Knighton ward comprises the area referred to as Knighton, South Knighton, West Knighton and an area traditionally referred to as Stoneygate. The Ward has approximately 7000 households and a population of over 17,000.

The population comprises 63% originating from the British Isles and the next group being mainly Hindu (12%). A good proportion of the housing is traditional, with above average housing prices.

There is a notable proportion of professional people and the general wealth in the ward is higher than many other city areas, much of the housing being owner occupied.

West Knighton is mainly semi-detached housing with a high proportion of Indian families living here.

Leicester City Council manage one block of flats on Knighton Road and two further blocks on Newmarket Street.

The Pendlebury Drive area in West Knighton comprises mainly of blocks of flats managed by Paragon Housing (PA Housing). The area is notably less wealthy than the rest of the ward.

Knighton Park has Green Flag status and covers 78 acres. It is extensively used. It has an outdoor gym, children’s play area, sports fields, a spinney and various events occur on the park, the main event is the “Knighton Park fun day” traditionally held on the 1st Sunday in September. Recorded crime on the park is low.

There is a large number of private Residential Care Homes, the largest is South Lodge and a number are owned by Prime Life Care whose head office is in Knighton.

Lynette Steadman (PCSO)

I have worked for Leicestershire Police since 1990 and became a PCSO in 2005, based at the former Welford Road Police Station until March 2016 where I relocated to Wigston Police Station. I have been a member of the neighbourhood team for Knighton since 2007.
I will continue to visit victims of crime to provide reassurance and crime prevention advice. I will also work with the rest of the Knighton team to tackle any concerns in the local community.

Priorities

ASB – Open spaces – You have said there is ASB taking place in open spaces across the beat. Officers will be in these areas carrying out pro-active patrols to reduce ASB related issues. They will be working with partner agencies and local schools to educate individuals and target habitual offenders.

We have carried out regular high visibility foot and vehicle patrols in Knighton / West Knighton area after dark in response to intelligence gathered from the community. We have continued to speak with members of the public to ensure we are up to date with any emerging patterns.

Road safety – You have told us there are e-scooters and off-road bikes being ridden across the beat. We are aware of the nuisance these can cause pedestrians and other road users. We will be carrying out patrols and local operations to try and tackle this issue and speaking to owners.

Overall, there has been a reduction in residential burglaries in the Knighton area, although we continue to work on this priority by helping people to understand how they can improve their own security and by patrolling the area at the key times.
