PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SOUTH AFRICAN PROPOSAL FOR ELEPHANTS (17 October 1994)
Motion Details
That this House is alarmed to learn of the proposal by South Africa to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to downlist its elephant population from Appendix I to Appendix II thus allowing renewed international trade in elephant products; notes that since elephants were placed on Appendix I there has been a dramatic fall in poaching and a collapse of the world market in ivory; demands that Her Majesty's Government opposes any lessening of the protection currently afforded to African elephants; and calls upon President Mandela to veto the South African proposal.
