Temple on the hilltop
With leafless winter trees it is possible to glimpse the Tuscan Temple on Rievaulx Terrace high above the valley. The OS map shows this as the 'Tuscan Temple' and this is also its official name according to the National Trust, but both the listed buildings website and Pevsner's North Riding book refer to it as 'Doric'. Maybe it's just a question of interpretation of architectural style. The temple is part of the Duncombe Park estate and dates from circa 1758.

The Tuscan Temple, Rievaulx Terrace
The official name is the Tuscan Temple, but the style is Doric and it is referred to by this name in Pevsner's book on North Riding buildings and also on official listed building sites. The temple dates from around 1758 and a look inside reveals a painted winged goddess on the ceiling and a tessellated floor using medieval tiles 'rescued' from the abbey in the valley below.
