Old Milestone by the A166, Gate Helmsley parish
Carved stone post by the A166, in parish of GATE HELMSLEY (RYEDALE District), East of Gate Helmsley; opposite the entrance to Balloon Tree Nursery, by the road, on South side of road. Mounting block steps with inset milestone, erected by the York to Kexby Bridge & Grimston to Stonedale End turnpike trust in the 19th century.

Old milestone
When first found and recorded for the Milestone Society in 2009 this stone, the bottom half, was just visible in the verge opposite its present site. Two York members visited the Garden Centre opposite and found that they had the top part. In 2011 it was dug up, resited on the north side of the road at the Garden Centre entrance and the top part attached. It was painted white but that soon disappeared. The legend, To/YORK/VII/Miles, was inscribed for the York, Kexby Bridge and Garrowby Hill Turnpike Trust in the late 18C or early 19C.

Old milestone
A rear view of the 18/19C milestone at Gate Helmsley east of Stamford Bridge on the A166. There is no discernible legend on this face so it may never have been turned round and reinscribed or had a plate added as other milestones still to be found on this turnpike were.
