Old milepost
This is an F Mattison & Co. Bedale 'rose' casting that has lost its top section. The original route from Pickering to Whitby follows B roads from the A169 junction near Sleights railway station. This was the route of the Whitby to Middleton (Pickering) tollroad of 1764-1851. The North Riding CC mileposts would have been set up about the turn of the century.

Cast iron post by the B1416, in parish of WHITBY (SCARBOROUGH District), Ruswarp Lane, High Stakesby, by No. 8; 100m South of roundabout junction with the A171, by the road, on East side of road. Bedale rose iron casting, erected by the District Council in the 19th/20th century.
