Ghost sign, Tanner Row, York
So ghostly as to be largely indecipherable - there may be more than one layer. I think it reads: "New Central W.M. Club" (presumably Working Men's Club)?

37 Tanner Row, York
A great big slab of red brick, quite Georgian in character but built c1850 before the Victorians became so wedded to Gothic. It looks as if it was either of two builds or the right-hand five bays had been cleaned. Grade II listed. Originally a hotel, now offices of English Heritage (now Historic England). In front are the fine wrought-iron gates to the former railway company offices.

Grand Hotel, York
This splendid building, only a part of which can be seen in this view, was designed by William Bell and Horace Field for the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway. There can hardly be a better monument to the confident prosperity of Edwardian railway companies. It remained as railway offices into the privatisation era but was bought by Cedar Court Hotels in 2007 and converted into Yorkshire's only 5-star hotel, retaining many of the original features.
