Courtyard at Betton Farm

Fossil Reef
There are former quarries on both sides of the road near Betton Farm which exploited the Upper Jurassic limestone. This is the outside of the south quarry, which is now part of the Betton Farm enterprise. These rock strata are part of a barrier reef which enclosed quiet lagoons to the east. Echinoderm Fossils
To the left of the 1p coin (for scale) is part of the shell of a creature like a sea urchin, and scattered round it are four spines from the same or a similar animal. Coral Reef
These rocks formed from coral and carbonate sand in Jurassic times, when what is now northern England lay much closer to the Equator and the sea was warm enough for corals. Gastropod Fossil
