These rocks formed from coral and carbonate sand in Jurassic times, when what is now northern England lay much closer to the Equator and the sea was warm enough for corals. See http://www.bettonfarm.co.uk/Betton-Farm-Archaeological-and-Geological-Quarry-Site.html for plans to develop the quarry as a visitor facility.
