Goldthorn Hill in Wolverhampton
This image is of the A4039 from Bilston, showing Goldthorn Hill, looking west towards Penn. Off to the left is the Aldi store (soon to be increased in size) which is on the site formerly occupied by the Fighting Cocks public house. Goldthorn Hill is notorious for traffic congestion westbound between 3pm and 6pm, and probably 8am to 9am too. The A459 leas left towards Dudley and Halesowen, and right along Dudley Road towards Wolverhampton city centre. There are good shops to obtain all your Asian spices and sweets.

The road is being dug up south of Upper Villiers Street to install new sewage pipes. The diversions go all the way to the Wolverhampton Ring Road, and local delays are considerable at busy times of day. Image]

Goldthorn Hill at Fighting Cocks, Wolverhampton
Looking west up the A4039 Goldthorn Hill towards Penn, off to the left is the Aldi store, opened on the site of the former Fighting Cocks public house, which was demolished in 1993. Planning permission has now been granted for the store to expand. This will involve the demolition of the beige semi-detached house pair left of centre in the image.

Goldthorn Hill approaching Fighting Cocks, Wolverhampton
This is the A4039 from Penn to Bilston. Ahead is the crossroads with the A459 (Wolverhampton-Dudley) named after the public house which formerly occupied the site now used by Aldi. Some early twentieth century semi-detached houses have "lost" their chimney stacks, while others have no remaining chimney pots. This road is jammed with traffic regularly on weekdays between 8:00 and 9:00, and 15:30 and 18:00.

Houses in Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton
The semi-detached houses on the left are Nos 11 and 13 Goldthorn Hill. They are to be demolished in 2020 to make more land available for the adjacent Aldi store to expand. Presumably the non-vertical lamp post will also be replaced. Image]

Building site by Aldi at Fighting Cocks, Wolverhampton
A pair of semi-detached houses on Goldthorn Hill has been demolished this week in order for an extension to the Aldi store to make progress. I see the wonky lighting pole (now truncated) by that bit of brick wall is still there, but has been replaced by a new vertical one. Image]

Goldthorn Hill at Fighting Cocks in Wolverhampton
This is the A4039, looking towards Penn. The Aldi store is off to the left. This road is busy, and is notorious for traffic jams here at the transition from dual to single carriageway, and further on where motorists wish to turn right but oncoming traffic will not let them. This is daily during on school days after about 3pm until about 6pm! Turning right out of Aldi can be difficult, and should probably not be allowed. The road is being dug up south of Upper Villiers Street to install new sewage pipes. The diversions go all the way to the Wolverhampton Ring Road, and delays are considerable at busy times of day (luckily, no schools).
