Grade II listed Palmer's Hospital, Bridgnorth
On the south side of St Leonard's Close. This is not a medical hospital, but a hospital in the medieval sense of a charitable institution for the housing and maintenance of the needy. Palmer's Hospital has eight almshouses, four of which are the offices of Bridgnorth Housing Trust. Palmer's Hospital was erected in 1687 to house ten widows from the High Town area of Bridgnorth, bequeathed by the Reverend Francis Palmer in his will dated 1680. Palmer was the Rector at St. Swithun's Church in Sandy, Bedfordshire from February 1662 until his death in 1682. The hospital was built in memory of both his mother, who is buried in nearby St Leonard's churchyard, and his uncle Colonel Francis Billingsley, who was killed in the churchyard when the town was stormed by Parliamentarian troops in March 1646. Palmer's Hospital was completely rebuilt in 1889. Little if anything of the original fabric remains. The building was Grade II listed in 1949.
