Newhampton Arts Centre
The Arts Centre, part of the Wolverhampton City College, occupies a building that has served various educational purposes during its lifetime. Designed by the architect T.S. Fleming, it was a Higher Grade School from 1894 to 1921, then the Municipal Secondary School until 1945, followed by the Grammar School until 1974. Until recently, it's been hiding its magnificence behind the trees on the frontage, but these have just been trimmed, opening the view up significantly since

Secondary School
The subtle variation in colouring shows that the two words are not of the same period. The word 'School' is original, matching the window lintels and string courses, but 'Secondary' is slightly darker and was clearly inserted (probably in place of 'Grade') when the school changed its designation in 1921 - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2812954 . The full lettering can be seen here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2809351

The Municipal Secondary School (detail), Wolverhampton
Examine the terracotta lettering, then take a look at another image, and its perceptive observations. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2812959
Despite the establishment date of 1921, this part of the building is earlier, dating from 1894. It was originally the Higher Grade School constructed of detailed brick and terracotta designed by T.H.Fleeming. The school was further extended in 1926. It became the Municipal Grammar School in 1945, then merged with other schools to be part of a composite "Colton Hills Comprehensive" in 1974. Various amalgamations and re-namings and re-sitings led to its present use as the City of Wolverhampton College. This is a further education college formed in September 1999 as the result of a merger of Wulfrun College in Wolverhampton and Bilston Community College in Bilston.
