Spice Avenue Balti Restaurant in Wolverhampton
In the early 1990s this was the first of the "bring your own booze" curry houses in Wolverhampton sporting the "balti" name rather than the previously fashionable "tandoori" or even earlier just plain "curry". The kitchen was open to full view, behind the serving area. In a basic decor, just a few basic meals were offered at a good price, and very tasty they were too.
Only three out eleven units in this row are now trading being at the edge of the defunct Summer Row regeneration scheme. After about twenty years of fiddle and fudge with no result we are yet again waiting for a positive rebuilding project to make Wolverhampton a place worth visiting. Perhaps we will then have a "fusion" restaurant ... if that hasn't already gone out of fashion!

Cleveland Parade in Cleveland Street, Wolverhampton
Many years of stop-start-stop road reorganisation and "city redevelopment" continue here. Ahead, the corner plot at the junction with Victoria Street is about to be built on. Victoria Street is closed (off to the right by the blue hoardings), and will remain permanently so to through traffic as it is to be fully pedestrianised. The austere and now dilapidated 1960s Cleveland Parade shops on the right are to be demolished at last.
Much of this should have been achieved fifteen or even twenty years ago!
The recently installed tower crane is enormous. I estimate to be almost a hundred feet (thirty metres) tall.

Shopping parade in Cleveland Street, Wolverhampton
Numbers 1-7 Cleveland Street are in a very drab row of shops built in 1961, and awaiting closure when (eventually) the defunct Summer Row city regeneration is replaced by viable rebuilding schemes. Out of eleven units here, only three remain in business, the best being the Spice Avenue Balti Restaurant with the green frontage on the left. This view across Cleveland Street is from Summer Row.
update October 2013: All but one of these units are now in use by small businesses.
