Old brick and terracotta in Queen Square, Wolverhampton
It is often revealing to look above the frontages of city centre businesses. This slightly ramshackle roof top with decorative brick and terracotta is above Kelly's Recruitment Services, 42 Queen Square (formerly High Green, then Market Square until 1866). This is not a listed building, though Nos 41, 43 and 44 are. This, it suggested is a 1726 built false front to the 16th century building at the rear. Image]

43 & 44 Queen Square, Wolverhampton
Until fairly recently this was the local branch of Nationwide Building Society, but what we see now is primarily an early 18th century house (1726) that is built onto an even earlier, mid 16th century, rear section. The whole was Grade II listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101207741-43-and-44-queen-square-st-peters-ward#.Y5OrrnbP3IU & https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1207741 in 1949.

Button Gwinnett ... Button who?
The blue plaque is on the wall of St Peter's House in Exchange Street less than a hundred metres from St Peter's Church in Wolverhampton city centre. As a representative of the state of Georgia, his was the second signature on the United States Declaration of Independence. Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Button_Gwinnett gives a good account of his fascinating (but forgotten?) life, cut short in 1777 following injury in a duel, instigated by Gwinnett himself! Both men were injured but his opponent survived. Button Gwinnett died three days later of gangrene resulting from having a bone in his leg shattered.
