Signpost at Autherley Junction near Wolverhampton
To the left and ahead is the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, opened in 1772, and engineered by James Brindley. Back to the right is the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction (now Shropshire Union) Canal, opened in 1835 and engineered by Thomas Telford.

Autherley Junction near Oxley in Wolverhampton
Narrowboat 'Golden Fleece' has just emerged from the Shropshire Union Canal, and will continue northwards along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal towards Penkridge, Stafford and Great Haywood Junction (Trent and Mersey Canal).

Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal at Autherley Junction, Wolverhampton
Looking north, the Shropshire Union Canal leads off to the left. The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal continues ahead to Penkridge, Stafford and Great Haywood, where it meets the Trent and Mersey Canal (23km or 14 miles, as the heron flies). Sustrans Route 81 passes along the towpath.

Autherley Junction, Wolverhampton
The inexperienced tiller man on this hire boat is in the process of "getting it wrong" as he attempts to enter the Shropshire Union Canal where it joins the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. When approaching from the north, the course needs to be from the far right as the turn is much more than ninety degrees; there is plenty of water. Image]
