Bentley Canal Junction
From 1843 the Bentley Canal connected the Wyrley and Essington Canal at Wednesfield to the Anson Branch of the Walsall Canal at this point. The canal provided a much more direct link between Wolverhampton and Walsall. The Bentley Canal closed in 1961.

Junction of Bentley Canal and Anson branch of Walsall Canal, 1979
The view is from the eastern remnant of the Bentley Canal as it was found in April 1979; behind the camera position it had been infilled. Both the Anson branch and the Bentley Canal were abandoned in 1961 though at the time of the photography, the Anson branch still had water.

Walsall Canal, Anson branch in 1979
In this view from Bentley Mill Bridge the watered stretch of the branch continues ahead then appears to turn a bend to the left but in fact the canal is severed there by an embankment carrying the M6 motorway. The Anson branch of the Walsall Canal had been abandoned in 1961 and so there was no need for the motorway to bridge it.

Bentley Mill Lane
A surprisingly quiet side street on the western side of the M6, which seems to be quite well insulated from the motorway traffic noise (perhaps by trees). Before the construction of the A454 Black Country Route, it's fair to assume it used to run right through from here to the Wolverhampton Road just to the north, but is now a cul-de-sac.

Eastern end of Bentley Canal in 1979
The Bentley Canal connected the Wyrley and Essington Canal with the Walsall Canal at its Anson Branch. This is the Anson Branch end with a little water of that branch in the foreground. Both the Bentley Canal and the Anson branch were abandoned by 1961 and as can be seen in the image, this end of the canal had already been infilled by 1979.
