Captain Smith's statue was sculptured by Kathleen, Lady Scott, C.V.O and unveiled by the Captain's daughter Helen on 29th July 1914. The inscription reads: CAPT. OF R.M.S. TITANIC COMMANDER EDWARD SMITH R.D. R.N.R. BORN JANUARY 27 1850 DIED APRIL 15 1912 BEQUEATHING TO HIS COUNTRYMEN THE MEMORY & EXAMPLE OF A GREAT HEART A BRAVE LIFE AND A HEROIC DEATH ~ BE BRITISH

Situated in Sandford Gate off Lower Sandford Street WS13 6RB, this centre carries out practical driving tests for cars. The two notices in the car park to the left of the photo, have the following wording: Left notice This car park is not to be used for practising manoeuvres Right notice Parking for driving test candidates only Theory tests, which candidates have to pass before they can take their practical tests, are carried out at other locations nearby.

These two notices which have been produced by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, are located inside the entrance to the test centre in Sandford Gate. They have the following wording: Left notice REVERSE PARKING ON QUEEN ST/WALSALL ROAD PLEASE COULD ALL ADI'S NOT USE THIS AREA FOR PRACTISING REVERSE PARKING LATELY THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN ADI'S BLOCKING THIS AREA FOR EXAMINERS, AND THEN NOT MOVING ON TO ALLOW TESTS TO CONTINUE THERE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN 2 SERIOUS INCIDENTS WHERE ONE EXAMINER WAS VERBALLY ABUSED BY AN ADI, AND ANOTHER EXAMINER RESORTED TO SOUNDING THE HORN TO PREVENT AN ADI ALLOWING THEIR PUPIL TO REVERSE INTO THE TEST CAR THESE TYPES OF INCIDENT ARE UNACCEPTABLE, AND MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE. Statue of Captain Edward John Smith, who was the commander of the RMS Titanic, he was one of the 1513 who lost their lives when the ship struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage in April 1912. The memorial was sculpted by Lady Kathleen Scott, widow of the late polar explorer, Robert Falcon Scott; it cost £740 to commission and manufacture and was unveiled in June 1914. The statue stands in Museum Gardens. He was born in Hanley in Staffordshire in January, 1850. Not sure why there is a statue in Lichfield other than Hanley being in the diocese of Lichfield. The plaque inscription reads: "Commander Edward John Smith, R.D., R.N.R. Born January 27. 1850. Died April 15. 1912. Bequeathed to his countrymen the memory and example of a great heart and a great life and a heroic death. Be British."
