The Signal House (former Midland Railway Station)
Opposite the present Evesham Railway Station was the Evesham station of the former Midland Railway. Today it is no longer a station but its railway connections are remembered in its current name "The Signal House".

Evesham (WR) station, with Down local train
View SE, towards Honeybourne, Oxford, etc.: ex-GW London, Reading, Oxford etc. - Worcester etc. main line. Directly on the right is the separate ex-Midland station, on the Birmingham - Redditch - Evesham - Ashchurch line (closed 10/62 - 9/63). The train is the 12.09 Stratford-on-Avon to Worcester (Shrub Hill), which had joined the main line at Honeybourne; the locomotive is '5101' 2-6-2T No. 4152 (built 6/47).

The Midland Station, road side, Evesham
The Midland station in Evesham was the most important south of Redditch on the rural line that ran from Barnt Green to Ashchurch - both being on the main Birmingham to Gloucester line. This view is of the main building on the up-side platform (for Redditch & Barnt Green). It was closed to all traffic in September 1963, together with the line south of Redditch. It was immediately alongside the GWR station on the line from Oxford to Worcester which remains open. This photo was taken from the footbridge of the GWR station. The Midland station buildings are still standing & can be seen in this very similar 2008 view: Image The goods shed beyond has been replaced by housing.

Evesham (Midland) railway station (site), Worcestershire
Opened in 1864 on the Midland Railway's 'loop' line from Birmingham to Gloucester via Redditch, this station closed in 1964. It was adjacent to the Great Western station in Evesham, which is still open. This image of the Midland station forecourt was taken from the current station.

Evesham: site of former Midland station, 1993
View SW, towards Ashchurch: ex-Midland (Birmingham) - Barnt Green - Redditch - Evesham - Ashchurch line. The station closed with the line on to Ashchurch on 9/9/63, the section from Redditch having closed already on 1/10/62. The ex-GWR station (see Image]) was parallel, where the tracks are seen here but the two routes were only connected through sidings - if at all. The Midland station buildings are still standing - in part - in the middle by the car-park.

Evesham (ex-GWR) station, 1993
View westward, towards Worcester: ex-GWR (London etc.) - Oxford - Worcester etc. main line. Until 9/63, there was also the ex-Midland station beside it on the left - see Image

Outside Evesham Station
This view, taken from the station footbridge, shows the forecourt area which incorporates car parking and a taxi rank. Students of railway architecture will instantly recognise the Signal House as a Midland Railway building - typical of the design used for small to medium sized stations. In fact, this is all that remains of the Midland station which was on the line from Barnt Green to Ashchurch. This was never a very busy route and the station closed to passengers in 1963 - unlike the former Great Western Railway station opposite which is still very much in business.

Up WR freight passing Evesham station
View NW, towards Worcester etc. on the ex-GWR London - Reading - Oxford - Worcester - Hereford/Wolverhampton main line; adjoining the ex-GWR station on the left is the ex-Midland station on the (Birmingham) Barnt Green - Redditch - Ashchurch line - closed 1/10/62 - 9/9/63, Ashchurch being ahead at this point, the line from the Birmingham direction having crossed over the GWR a short distance behind the camera. The Class D freight is headed by 4-6-0 No. 6907 'Davenham Hall' (built 11/40, withdrawn 2/65).
