Woods Music Shop
Woods music shop in Cross Street was famous across Yorkshire for its specialist selection of instruments and sheet music. It has just been forced to close after 65yrs as the owner cannot afford to renew the lease. As yet, no alternative premises have been found outside the city centre.

New City Apartments, 36 Wood Street, Wakefield
Old maps suggest that this was built in the mid-1970s on the site of a small car park. That had been there since the 1950s at the awkward junction with Cross Street, straightened out by this development. The ground floor appears to be vacant or is being refitted. No 38 on the left appears to be an employment agency called Concept. The view is from Chancery Lane.

Parts of this grade II dual listed building date back to 1596. The interior retains some timber framing, including chamfered oak beams and joists. The ground floor has the remains of a moulded stone fireplace. The upper floor retains an oak panelled frieze and an elaborate Elizabethan plaster ceiling which contains the Garter Arms of Elizabeth I. There is also a complete fireplace. The back of The Cow Shed
The bland exterior of the building conceals the fact that it includes part of a late 15th century timber framed building, and further interior detailing from the late Elizabethan period. Not an obvious candidate from the outside to be Listed Grade II*.
