Batchworth Lock No 81, Grand Union Canal, with side lock
The side lock, on the left in the photograph and now out of use, formerly allowed boats to ascend onto the river at this point to serve several wharfs.

River Colne, Batchworth
Above Batchworth lock, the river and the Grand Union Canal share the same course for some distance. Both routes here seem to descend from the canal via weirs, beyond sight here, but a waterworks mostly out of sight to the right complicates matters. The smaller course to the left was flowing very briskly. This course also seems to link under the canal with waterways associated with the River Chess.
