Empty Stanfords building, Long Acre
Home of Stanfords from 1901 to early in 2019, when they moved to 7 Mercer Walk. This shop provided maps for royalty and other notable figures such as Frederick Lugard, Ernest Shackleton, Captain Scott and Amy Johnson to name a few. It was featured in many books and was mentioned in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles when Dr Watson was sent to Stanfords to procure a map of Dartmoor for Sherlock Holmes. It is sad to see this impressive building empty, with its portico a shelter for a homeless person.

Stanford's old store on Long Acre
After several years living away from London I intended to call in here for some maps and guide books for a forthcoming foreign holiday, only to find it had closed with no indication of a new location. But I eventually tracked it down Image See Image for when this store was open. The building dates from c.1900 by Herbert Read and Macdonald, and is grade II listed (list entry 1222308); the name Stanford is part of the permanent facade so will be protected by the listing.
