Old Chester Road/Alvanley Road junction, Helsby
Old Chester Road actually veers right at this junction, and the road directly ahead becomes Alvanley Road. This no doubt, explains the need for the fingerpost - Image Crescent Drive also joins this junction, out of sight on the right.

Edward VII pillarbox at Helsby
Edward VII was king from 1901 to 1910, so this box outside Helsby post office dates to that period. The box was cast by Andrew Handyside's iron foundry in Derby, and although the manufacturer's name on the front of the black base is in poor condition it would normally display: Handyside Derby&London

Middle Walk, below Helsby Crag
The honeypot feature (Helsby Crag) in this square accounts for the existing excellent images - so I thought I would add one that shows a different 'face' of SJ4975! The woodland on the slopes below the crag is beautiful and Middle Walk runs the length of it half-way up the slope but above the rooftops of the village below.

Helsby - view of the crag
The image is taken from the car park on the Chester Road in the middle of the village (SJ 4884 7559) although the woods and crags behind the houses are in the next square Image It is hard to be anywhere in Helsby without seeing the crags - the northern end of the Cheshire Sandstone Ridge marking the former coastline when the Mersey (behind the photographer) was much wider than it is today. A rainy (grainy?) afternoon ...
