Historic boating
The Sankey Canal was England's first modern canal, being opened in 1757. Sadly it was closed in 1963. Bridges were built over it, and it silted up. In 1981 Warrington Borough Council and the Warrington New Town Development Corporation attracted funds to carry out limited restoration, including this section on the boundary between Warrington and Great Sankey. The Sankey Canal Restoration Society held a Festival there in September 1993, transporting three boats to it by road. They were the first such craft to sail the canal for over 30 years.
