Preston Brook Tunnel, Cheshire
This canal tunnel at the northern end of the Trent and Mersey Canal is 1239 yards (1133 metres) in length, is only wide enough for a narrowboat, and is not quite straight. There is no towpath, so horses were led across the hill to the other end. Before steam and diesel engined boats, the men legged the vessels though the tunnel. The south portal is shown in this image. 1123 metres into the tunnel the waterway transforms into the Bridgewater Canal. North bound boats enter the tunnel on the hour until ten minutes past. South bound boats enter the tunnel at half past the hour, until forty minutes past. It takes about twenty minutes to take a narrowboat through the tunnel.

This is the east portal of the tunnel. Coming from the east, the canal has changed from the Trent and Mersey Canal to the Bridgwater Canal at the lock (behind the camera). The tunnel is 1239 yards (1133 metres) in length, with no towpath.

Above Preston Brook tunnel
As the towpath rises above the tunnel one can see that the tunnel entrance is only just below the surface. It goes through a bigger hill beyond though. The towpath follows a path over the hill. In working days, the horses would have been led over the top whilst the boatman legged through the tunnel.

Preston Brook tunnel
Taken on a duller day than that by Johnny Essex. The tunnel (1237 yards long) is too narrow to allow two boats to pass. Therefore there is a time control, northbound boats (this direction) being allowed to enter between 00 and 10 past, southbound boats between 30 and 40. It takes about 15-20 minutes to travel through. We had arrived at quarter past so had to wait.
