Winding hole, Bridgewater Canal, east of Thelwell
'Wind' as in breeze, not wool. Where a boat that is longer than the width of the canal can turn round. Between 1873 and 1894 this winding hole was extended southward to form a lake in the grounds of the newly-built Massey Hall, hence the white footbridge. The hall is now a school.
