On Tithebarn Road
The approximate location of the 18th century Tithe Barn, from which both the road and the village (Hale Barns) takes its name. The old structure - which was demolished generations ago - was very substantial (18 yards long and 18 feet wide) - so it could store that portion of produce (one tenth) which local farmers paid to the parish: a practice widespread across Europe at the time.

Lone survivor
The Hale Barns fish & chip shop is the only business still operating in this block - much of the remaining precinct having already been knocked down. But not for long: they lost the battle over compulsory purchase terms and will soon quit.

Open Air Art (4)
The old Square, Hale Barns: Altrincham Society of Artists summer exhibition.
(The current O/S map shows this as built-over, but this scene was 30 years ago.)
The former open ground has now been covered by the erection of a large supermarket building housing 'Booth's'.
