Taxis in Convoy, East Lancs Road
For more than half a century the annual Manchester taxi drivers' convoy to Blackpool was a special day out for hundreds of disabled children which provided a colourful spectacle for onlookers. The balloon festooned cavalcade began in 1949 when a cabbie was asked to show blind passengers around Manchester. At its height the convoy of taxis attracted more than 100 cabs carrying 200 plus children and attracted a great deal of attention as it headed to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. This view, taken in 1979, shows the convoy passing Haydock on the East Lancs Road. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/end-of-road-for-taxi-drivers-day-1057947 (Manchester Evening News) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/4275219.stm (BBC News) See also Image] and Image
