Decorated Taxi, East Lancashire Road
One of the decorated taxis taking part in The Manchester Taxi Drivers Organisation for Handicapped Children charity's 1979 outing, seen here passing below the footbridge over the East Lancs Road at Haydock. For more than half a century the annual taxi drivers' convoy to Blackpool was a special day out for hundreds of disabled children which provided a colourful spectacle for onlookers. The balloon festooned cavalcade began in 1949 when a cabbie was asked to show blind passengers around Manchester. At its height the convoy of taxis attracted more than 100 cabs carrying 200 plus children and attracted a great deal of attention as it headed to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/end-of-road-for-taxi-drivers-day-1057947 (Manchester Evening News) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/4275219.stm (BBC News) See also Image] and Image]
