Former Oxford Cinema, Duke Street
This building in Duke Street opened in 1912 as the Oxford Cinema, it closed as a cinema in 1956 and reopened the same year as the Plaza Ballroom. The Beatles performed here on more than occasion between 1962 and 1963. In the 1980's it became a nightclub named Cindys and later once again renamed The Plaza when it received a garish purple paint-job, before eventually closing in 2005 when it was The Orange House. As a derelict building it had become an eyesore and the target of vandalism but was saved from demolition due to its art-deco styling and it has recently been refurbished. Former Capitol Cinema and YMCA, Duke Street
The Capitol Cinema opened in 1929 on a prominent corner site at North Road and Duke Street and was closed by ABC on 9th December 1978. The building was then converted into a sports centre and at present is a gymnasium. The redbrick building facing is the YMCA Building opened by Earl of Aberdeen in 1903. In the middle of the roundabout is the Miners Monument depicting three members of the once thriving St Helens mining community, a pick-swinging miner, a 'pit-brow lass' and a young pit lad. The figures are set against a pillar of coal and mounted on a piece of local stone.
