St Helens - Mill Street Barracks - from east
This was, until recently, the home ("Training Ship Scimitar") of the St Helens Sea Cadet Corps. Inscriptions on the building show a date of 1861, along with the motto "DEFENCE NOT DEFIANCE". The building was originally the headquarters to the 2nd Volunteer (Rifle) Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment. See http://www.forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5919&start=20 for more information. For another view of the barracks, please see Image

St Mary?s Lowe House, St Helens
The impressive St Mary’s Lowe House, dubbed “The Poor Man’s Cathedral”, was built using money collected from working class people during the depression. The land on which the present church stands, was donated in 1793 by the widow of John Gorsuch Eccleston of Eccleston Hall (her maiden name was Lowe). The chapel was replaced with the current building, the tower and dome of which dominate the skyline of St Helens.
