This was, until recently, the home ("Training Ship Scimitar") of the St Helens Sea Cadet Corps. Inscriptions on the building show a date of 1861, along with the motto "DEFENCE NOT DEFIANCE". The building was originally the headquarters to the 2nd Volunteer (Rifle) Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment.
