"South Block", Cowley Hill Lane
Before moving to its present site in Hard Lane, Cowley High School occupied 2 adjacent buildings in Cowley Hill Lane. These were known as "North Block" built in 1882 and "South Block" built in 1911. North Block was largely destroyed more recently by fire, demolished and replaced with houses seen far right in the photo. South Block has been retained as private apartments.

Former Oxford Cinema, Duke Street
This building in Duke Street opened in 1912 as the Oxford Cinema, it closed as a cinema in 1956 and reopened the same year as the Plaza Ballroom. The Beatles performed here on more than occasion between 1962 and 1963. In the 1980's it became a nightclub named Cindys and later once again renamed The Plaza when it received a garish purple paint-job, before eventually closing in 2005 when it was The Orange House. As a derelict building it had become an eyesore and the target of vandalism but was saved from demolition due to its art-deco styling and it has recently been refurbished. Below is a website with some earlier photographs.

St Mary?s Lowe House, St Helens
The impressive St Mary’s Lowe House, dubbed “The Poor Man’s Cathedral”, was built using money collected from working class people during the depression. The land on which the present church stands, was donated in 1793 by the widow of John Gorsuch Eccleston of Eccleston Hall (her maiden name was Lowe). The chapel was replaced with the current building, the tower and dome of which dominate the skyline of St Helens.
