Penfold pillar-box, Bedford Park
To be found at the corner of The Orchard and Bedford Road. This is a genuine Victorian box, dating from circa 1870, NOT one of the many replicas (fakes?) manufactured in 1989. Genuine Penfold boxes vary in many minor details, whereas the 1989 boxes are all of one pattern. If the modern boxes carried the 'EIIR" cipher, then it would be quite clear that they are replicas. But the 1989 boxes carry the cipher of Queen Victoria, 'VR' - which is misleading. I can't be the only one to have been deceived, and it was a disappointment to discover I'd been fooled: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2139309
