Old and new at Westfield
The Westfield shopping centre, which claims to be the largest in Europe, opened in 2008. Adjacent to the site is a Grade II listed building, which dates from around 1898. This was originally a power station for the underground railway, now part of London Underground's Central Line. The building later became a machine tool shop before falling derelict. With the opening of Westfield, facilities were needed for buses which would transport people to and from the shopping centre. A new bus station was built alongside, and the former power station was brought back into use as a parking area for buses.
