Despite East Acton station on the Central Line being in the middle of the Old Oak Estate, this area is not actually in Acton but is part of the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, so should properly be considered to be in Shepherd's Bush. The houses are in the distinctive 'garden city' style that became very popular for local authority housing in the first half of the 20th century. In fact, estates such as this became possible only after the Town Planning Act 1909 which allowed architects flexibility to move away from strict 'grid-iron' layouts. The first such example was Hampstead Garden Suburb and Old Oak's architects were heavily influenced by its design. Work commenced in 1911 so the houses in this view, at the junction of Fitzneal Street and Erconwald Street, must have been among the first built as the date on the gable end indicates. The painted pebble dashed facades are original but most houses on the estate have plain brick. It is worth bearing in mind that although in recent years council housing has become associated with areas of deprivation, the houses here were intended for skilled working class people with steady incomes; they commanded relatively high rents.
