Facades on Ladbroke Grove
I know I should have waited for a complete break in the traffic, but if I had, I'd probably still be there. The tree-lined Ladbroke Grove carries the B450, and this terrace is between Cambridge and Oxford Gardens on the west side of the road.

Interesting location as the postbox is a Victorian Penfold type still in use. See:- Image

Victorian Penfold type postbox (1), corner of Ladbroke Grove & Oxford Gardens, Kensington, London
This is one of the postboxes designed by the architect J.W. Penfold and as can be seen they are quite ornate. They were manufactured by Cochrane & Co of Dudley, Worcestershire from 1866 to 1879, so this one has been is use for over 135 years. Today there are thought to be only about 92 surviving with two "clusters", where there are several - one in Cheltenham and the other here in Kensington. Much later replicas were manufactured in 1988-89 by another firm for use in historic and tourist locations. The box photographed here is an original. Postbox no. W10 14. Post code: W10 5UF. Last collection: 5.30 p.m. Monday to Friday; 12 noon Saturday. The box can be seen in location here:- Image Image Image

This view of the left side of the box shows, by the position of the hinges, that a large section of the front has to be swung to the side to remove mail. Image Image

Close-up of posting times and Royal Cypher of Queen Victoria. The cypher is not very clear because the box has been repainted so many times over its 135+ years of use. There are at least two different versions of Queen Victoria's cypher to be seen on postboxes. Image Image
