Bridge 179
A foot only accommodation bridge, namely one keeping access from one side of the canal to the other. When the canal was built this would have formed a barrier to east-west routes. People could cross at locks, but this is rather a long pound between locks so this bridge fills the gap.

Grand Union Canal: Bridge Number 179
Prior to the major extraction of gravel in the 1950s and the subsequent flooding of the gravel pits on the west side of the canal here the area between the canal and the River Colne was farmland known as Harefield Moor. This bridge, which is now blocked so that no one can use it, afforded access to this agricultural area, to the left, from Broadwater Farm, which is to the right.
