Southall: car parking seen across the former locomotive depot
Southall locomotive depot is now a home of the Great Western Society, which preserves locomotives and rolling stock, housing many carriages here. On the left is one of the former depot buildings now used by the Society.

Southall Rail Crash, 1997
View NW from a passing train: ex-GWR Paddington - Reading main line, just east of Southall Station. Four days before, a High-Speed Train from Swansea, with defective Advanced Warning System (AWS) had collided at high speed with an empty stone train being shunted across its path - protected by adverse signals. The consequences, including seven people killed, were horrific.

Ex-GWR '4700' class 2-8-0 at Southall Locomotive Depot
Lined up in front of a BR 2-10-0 is Churchward 2-8-0 No. 4705 (built 4/22, withdrawn 12/63). These engines were rarely seen in daytime, as they worked almost always on overnight Class C freight trains - and there were only nine of them.

Southall Locomotive Depot, with 0-6-0PTs and a WD 2-8-0
View eastward, outside the new Shed built in 1953 following war damage to the original. The two Collett '8750' class 0-6-0 Pannier tanks are Nos. 4608 and 8752 (built 1/42 and 10/33, withdrawn 9/64 and 1/63 respectively), both having always worked in the locality. The WD 'Austerity' 2-8-0 nearest is No. 90520, one of the 'regulars' working in on freight from Woodford Halse (LMR).

Railway workers, Southall
Taken from a westbound train which has paused here, east of Southall station, because there is a trespasser on the line. The workers are probably waiting for the crisis to pass as well. Note the buffer at the end of a siding to their right. The housing beyond is on Park Avenue.
