'One over the Ait', Kew Bridge
The Fuller's pub, 'One Over the Ait', is located on the north-west side of Kew Bridge in Brentford. The phrase, 'one over the eight', refers to the final drink that renders someone drunk. The first reference to it in print is in Fraser and Gibbons' Soldier & Sailor Words (1925): "One over the eight, one drink too many. Slightly intoxicated, the presumption being that an average 'moderate' man can safely drink eight glasses of beer." The word, 'Ait', here used instead, is an old word used in English place-names, being 'a small island in a river' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islands_in_the_River_Thames Brentford Ait, for example, is a small tree-covered island just up-river from Kew Bridge Image
