'One over the Ait', Kew Bridge
The Fuller's pub, 'One Over the Ait', is located on the north-west side of Kew Bridge in Brentford. The phrase, 'one over the eight', refers to the final drink that renders someone drunk. The first reference to it in print is in Fraser and Gibbons' Soldier & Sailor Words (1925): "One over the eight, one drink too many. Slightly intoxicated, the presumption being that an average 'moderate' man can safely drink eight glasses of beer." The word, 'Ait', here used instead, is an old word used in English place-names, being 'a small island in a river' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islands_in_the_River_Thames Brentford Ait, for example, is a small tree-covered island just up-river from Kew Bridge Image

New housing development at Kew Bridge
The protesters Image obviously failed in their attempt to stop this development. By 2012 the apartments were completed, with an adjacent "sales and marketing suite" open for business.

Kew Bridge Ecovillage
Last June, eco-protesters installed themselves on the disused former Scottish Widows site at the north end of Kew Bridge, where St George have so far failed to get planning permission from Hounslow for one of their big property developments. In December, there were 32 permanent residents http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kew_Bridge_Ecovillage . In the background rises the chimney of Image
