Statue to Alcock and Brown outside the Heathrow Academy
The inscription at the base of the statue says "Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Whitten Brown who made the first direct flight across the Atlantic. St John's Newfoundland - Clifden Ireland 14th - 15th June 1919." See also http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4777370
Appropriately it is placed outside the Heathrow Academy (formerly the Visitor Centre) which is the building here on the right. Nearby is a covered viewing stand for non-passengers looking on to the North Runway. This is the best viewpoint for the North Runway whereas the best viewpoint for the South Runway is at Myrtle Avenue - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3338755

Parking places beside hedge
The large hotel beyond the hedge is, as the lettering tells, the Renaissance Hotel; it lies immediately north of Heathrow Airport. The car parking area belongs to adjacent premises, possibly vacant at the time the image was recorded.
